Questions

›Why use WebM?

WebM is an open, royalty-free video format made for the web. All current major browsers play it, and it often makes smaller files than an H.264 MP4 of similar quality. Many sites offer both, with the MP4 as a fallback for older devices.

›VP9 or AV1?

AV1 usually makes the smallest files, but it is slower to encode and older devices may struggle to play it smoothly. VP9 is the safe, widely supported choice. Only the codecs your browser can encode are shown.

›Why does it take a while?

H.264 video isn't allowed in WebM, so every frame is re-encoded to VP9 or AV1. The sound is re-encoded to Opus. Long or high-resolution videos take longer, so a lower resolution speeds things up.

›Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed on your own device by your browser. They never touch our servers, so there are no upload waits, no size caps from us, and nothing to delete afterwards.
