MP4 to GIF
The best few seconds of an MP4, as a GIF that plays anywhere.
How it works
- 01Drop in an MP4. Phones, screen recorders and most video sites save MP4.
- 02Drag the timeline handles around the moment you want, then set the width, frame rate and an optional caption. The size estimate updates as you go.
- 03Click Make GIF and download it. If the GIF comes out too big, make an MP4 loop instead.
Questions
›Why turn an MP4 into a GIF?
A GIF plays by itself, loops forever and needs no player, so it works in emails, documentation, README files, slides and chat apps where a video would not autoplay or is not allowed.
›How long should the GIF be?
As short as the moment allows. GIF size grows with every second, every pixel of width and every frame, so a clip of a few seconds at around 480 px wide and 10 to 15 frames per second is a good balance. Widths go from 240 to 800 px and frame rates from 5 to 30, and the estimate shows the size before you make it.
›Is the sound kept?
No. GIF is a silent image format, so the sound is dropped. If you need it, keep the clip as a video and cut it with Trim video instead.
›Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files are processed on your own device by your browser. They never touch our servers, so there are no upload waits, no size caps from us, and nothing to delete afterwards.
