BMP usually stores every pixel uncompressed. A JPG of the same picture is typically a small fraction of the size, which makes it practical to email and upload.
›JPG or PNG for BMP files?
JPG for photos and scans. PNG for screenshots, diagrams and pixel art, where it stays perfectly sharp and is still far smaller than the BMP.
›Which BMP files work?
Most BMP files from Windows apps and scanners decode fine. A few uncommon variants may not; any file that can't be read is marked in the list.
